A favourite sofa will likely have a story behind it. It has experienced family time, visitors, silent evenings, and numerous cups of tea. Never mind, though, that even the finest sofa begins to show its wear after a few years. The cushions become flatter, the material becomes less bright, and the shape is no longer as sharp as it was before. In the case of this client in Dubai, the frame was solid, and the sofa was comfortable, but only required a decent upgrade. We replied that we would do it by completely re-upholstering it in high-quality leather.

We began with a visit to have a look at the sofa personally. Re-upholstery is a highly practical undertaking, and before we make any suggestions, we need to know the shape of the piece, the size of the piece, and the condition of the piece. We then considered various leather options, together with the client. The largest talk was about colour. Leather has the ability to raise a room in a very conspicuous manner, and the shade needed to blend in with the rest of the house. The client has selected a rich, warm leather that would be timeless and would be compatible with numerous different types of decoration. Real leather also grows very well with time; that is, it is softened and more characterful, not worn out.

Our main work was then on the sofa, and it was taken to our workshop. Our Sofa upholstery crew had the old cloth carefully taken off and the frame, the springs and the foam within were all inspected. Any sections that required to be freshened up were replaced such that the completed sofa would not only look fresh, but also feel fresh. Then the new leather was cut to shape with great care. Leather is not a material that forgives a lot - each cut and each seam should be thought through correctly, as the errors cannot be concealed.

Our workmen were stretching and fixing the leather over the frame, and were causing every surface to be smooth and every corner to be sharp. The stitches were done using a similar thread to achieve a neat and professional appearance. Buttons, piping, and other minor details were incorporated as per the original design of the sofa.

When the sofa was brought back to the home of the client, the transformation was incredible. The frame, which had served the family long enough, was now a brand-new, high-quality piece of furniture. The leather was soft, the form crisp, and the room was rather refined due to it.
