Why the Client Called Us

The room gets direct afternoon sun most of the year, and the existing sheers barely blocked it. By 3 p.m. the glare on the TV wall made the screen hard to watch, and the heat from the glass kept the room warmer than the rest of the apartment. The floor-to-ceiling windows also faced another residential block, so privacy at night meant keeping every light off.

Consultation and Fabric Selection

Our team checked the light at midday and again near sunset, since the glare shifts through the afternoon, then measured the window run on site, including a small ceiling step near the corner that would affect the track.

With dark oak flooring, black steel shelving and brass fittings already in the room, the client wanted a fabric with real weight and texture rather than a flat weave. We selected a heavyweight custom-made curtain in a dense, chunky basket-weave, a warm mocha-taupe tone that sits close to the shelving unit's finish. The multi-layered soundproof construction gave the thickness needed for both the glare and the privacy issue, without an added blackout lining.

A pencil pleat header was agreed for the top, suited to the tall drop and the more formal look the client wanted for evenings with guests.

Preparing the Curtains

Panels were cut with enough fullness for even folds against the glass, seams matched so the weave lines up across the width, and hems weighted so the fabric sits straight near the AC vents. Side edges were double-folded, and the pencil pleat tape was set to the on-site measurements before the hooks went in.

Installation and Finishing

The team protected the oak flooring, then set the track with a laser level across the full run, including the ceiling step, drilling into solid structure to hold the panel weight. Once hung, each panel was adjusted until the drop met the floor with a slight break, steamed and hand-dressed for even folds, and drawn back and forth to check the glide before sign-off. The site was cleared of all packaging.
